In spite of being affected by the domestic turmoil and external factors in 2014, the SET Index rose to 1,497.67 points by the end of 2014, up 15.32 percent from the end of 2013 with an average daily trading of THB 45.47 billion (approximately USD 1.38 billion), considered the highest in ASEAN for three consecutive years.
In 2014, The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) achieved key milestones to become ASEAN’s number one exchange in several aspects, covering:
- At the end of 2014, SET Index closed at 1,497.67 points, up 15.32 percent from the end of 2013 which is a higher growth than almost all capital markets in ASEAN and also beat MSCI World Index and MSCI Asia ex Japan Index.
- An average daily trading value was THB 45.47 billion, considered the highest in ASEAN for three consecutive years.
- On November 27, 2014, the combined market capitalization of SET and Market for Alternative Investment (mai) hit a highest record since the market established, at THB 15.1 trillion.
- Market capitalization of newly-listed companies was THB 304.8 billion, the highest in ASEAN for two consecutive years.
- The total trading account reached new high of over one million accounts at 1.08 million accounts, as of November, 2014.
- The ASEAN scorecard showed that average corporate governance (CG) score of Thai listed companies has been highest among other ASEAN countries, for two consecutive years.
- MSCI added four Thai stocks into MSCI Global Standard Indices, the highest number of additions in Asia.
- Dow Jones included ten Thai listed companies to the Dow Jones Sustainability Emerging Markets Index (DJSI Emerging Markets), the highest number in ASEAN. Of the ten listed firms, four have been selected in the 2014 Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DSJI World).
- SET joined the UN Sustainable Stock Exchange (SSE), becoming the first exchange in ASEAN to pledge commitment to the promotion of sustainability within its capital markets.
- The total trading volume of Thailand Futures Exchange (TFEX) was 36.02 million contracts, or 147,025 contracts per day, a big jump of 116 percent from a year earlier. On December 15, TFEX daily trading volume hit an all-time high of 864,479 contracts.

- In 2014, trading from non-SET 100 stocks rose at a much high value, equivalent to 34 percent of total trading value, up from 24 percent in 2013.
- The top three industry group by trading value were: Telecom, Banking and Resources at 17, 16 and 12 percent, respectively.
- The domestic institutional investors were net buyers, worth THB 69.61 billion, continuing from last year. Even foreign investors were net sellers for two consecutive years, the amount significantly decreased from THB 194.70 billion in 2013 to THB 35.97 billion in 2014.
- Listed companies on SET and mai raised funds through equity worth a combined THB 276.54 billion in 2014, down 18.77 percent from 2013. In the primary market, THB 131.13 billion was raised from initial public offerings (IPOs) of 36 companies and nine property funds and real estate investment trusts, while THB 145.41 billion was raised from the secondary market
Derivatives
- In 2014, derivatives trading volume jumped 116 percent from a year earlier to an average of 147,025 contracts per day, mostly due to rises of single stock futures and the change in SET50 index futures’ contract sizes.
- On December 15, TFEX trading volume hit an all-time high of 864,479 contracts. For the whole month of December, the average trading volume of TFEX rose 72 percent from previous month, or 272,636 contracts per day.
