TheCityUK’s 2020 and Beyond Debate, taking place on Tuesday 12 June, will consider how the financial and professional services sector can work with governments and regulators to tackle the big economic challenges of the future. The debate will consider how government and industry can support economic development and funding for business; the future of global trade; and how to finance investment in sustainable infrastructure and renewable energy.
Key speakers at the debate include David Lidington MP, (Minister for Europe, Foreign & Commonwealth Office), Mark Hoban MP (Financial Secretary to the Treasury), Sir Winfried Bischoff (Chair, Lloyds Banking Group), Karen Pierce (UK Ambassador to the World Trade Organisation), Harsha V. Singh (Deputy Director-General, World Trade Organisation), and Dame Helen Alexander (Deputy President, CBI).
Speaking ahead of the debate Chris Cummings, CEO of TheCityUK, said:
“We need some radical solutions to the current economic difficulties we face and financial services will have a crucial role in this process. To deliver a sustainable recovery and accelerating economic growth requires us to think beyond the next six months. Positive changes to the UK’s economic model and business environment need to be considered with a long-term perspective, and not simply be short-term kneejerk reactions to the latest crisis.
“Looking to the future we need to ensure business has access to a variety of funding sources so that private sector businesses of all sizes can deliver economic growth. We need to review the barriers to trade that are threatening to fragment successful global markets. And we need to invest in modern infrastructure and clean energy options so that our society and economy are sustainable over the long term.
“This debate will bring together representatives from business, government, and non-governmental organisations from across the UK, Europe and internationally. A coordinated approach will help set a positive framework for future global growth.”
Other speakers at the event include Georg Boomgaarden (German Ambassador to the United Kingdom), Lord Brittan (Vice Chairman, UBS Investment Bank), Mario Nava (Head of Unit, Banking and Financial Conglomerates, EU Commission) and Christine Farnish (Chair, Consumer Focus).
