The Kansas City Board of Trade trading volume for the month of September totaled 289,720 contracts for the exchange as a whole. Hard red winter wheat futures volume amounted to 280,597 contracts.
Market activity during the latter part of the month was influenced greatly by the possibility of the U.S. Government approving a financial relief package for Wall Street financial institutions. The market slipped into a wait-and-see mode, with liquidation amidst stock market losses.
Hard red winter wheat prices slipped during the time period from the last day of August to the last day of September. The December 2008 contract fell from $8.39 1/2 to $7.12, a loss of $1.27 1/2. The March 2009 contract fell from $8.60 to $7.33, for a loss of $1.27. The May 2009 contract fell from $8.73 1/2 to $7.46 3/4, a decrease of $1.26 3/4. The July 2009 contract fell from $8.73 to $7.50, a loss of $1.23.
