The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) welcomes the appointment by the HKSAR Government of Mr Carlson Tong as the Chairman of the SFC and of Dr Kelvin Wong Tin-yau as a non-executive director with effect from 20 October 2012.
Mr Tong, who is now a non-executive director of the SFC, will succeed Dr Eddy Fong, who has chaired the SFC for the past six years (Note 1 and 2).
The SFC looks forward to working with Mr Tong and Dr Wong and expresses gratitude to Dr Fong for his contributions and leadership.
"I am certain that the SFC will continue to benefit hugely from Carlson's vast experience of the activities and markets we regulate. I am also sure that we will benefit from Kelvin's expertise as a new member of our Board,” the SFC’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Ashley Alder said.
"I would also like to thank the Chairman for his advice and unstinting support in the past six years at a time when the global financial market faced unprecedented challenges and uncertainties. On behalf of all the colleagues at the SFC, I wish Eddy all the best in his future endeavours,” Mr Alder added.
Dr Fong said his time with the SFC has been challenging: “I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to work closely with fellow SFC colleagues and members of the Board on regulatory initiatives that have strengthened Hong Kong’s position as an international financial centre and enhanced the collaboration with Mainland China.”
"The global financial crisis in 2008 was an invaluable experience and being part of the SFC as it unfolded has made my learning curve much more challenging and fascinating,” he said.
Echoing their comments, Mr Tong said: “The SFC plays a vital role in upholding Hong Kong's position as a leading international financial centre, and I feel honoured to have been appointed as its Chairman.”
"I would like to express my gratitude to Eddy for leading the SFC over these past six years. I have greatly appreciated his guidance since joining the SFC as a non-executive director 18 months ago. The SFC has a very strong team under Ashley's leadership and I look forward to working closely with him, the Board, the Executive Team and our stakeholders,” Mr Tong added.
