Today, Dr. Barbara Hendricks, Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety, visited the European Energy Exchange (EEX) and gained insights on the working of the exchange.Following an expert discussion with representatives of EEX regarding the implementation of the energy turnaround and the importance of trading in emission allowances as a climate protection tool, Federal Minister Hendricks visited EEX’s Market Supervision – the heart of the exchange.
“We were very pleased to welcome Federal Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks at EEX“, confirms Peter Reitz, Chief Executive Officer of EEX. In the talk with the minister, he emphasised that “exchanges are already making an important contribution to the market-based integration of renewable energies today, for example, by offering a transparent exchange platform for trading in Guarantees of Origin.”
With a view to the further development of the European emissions trading scheme, the Federal Minister also exchanged views on the planned reforms with EEX. Peter Reitz comments on this: “A structural reform can strengthen the confidence in emissions trading as a climate protection tool. However, at the same time, this needs to be combined with reliable long-term framework conditions. This particularly includes ambitious targets for greenhouse gas emission reductions.” In conclusion, the Federal Minister also discussed the execution of auctions for CO2 emission allowances.
The European Energy Exchange (EEX) is the leading energy exchange in Europe. It develops, operates and connects secure, liquid and transparent markets for energy and commodities products. At EEX, contracts on Power, Coal and Emission Allowances as well as Freight and Agricultural Products are traded or registered for clearing. Alongside EEX, EPEX SPOT, Powernext, Cleartrade Exchange (CLTX) and Gaspoint Nordic are also part of EEX Group. Clearing and settlement of trading transactions are provided by the clearing house European Commodity Clearing (ECC).
