In October 2017, the volume traded in EEX dairy product futures reached a new monthly record. In total, a volume of 14,140 tonnes (equivalent to 2,828 contracts) was traded which is more than 4 times the volume in October 2016 (3,490 tonnes, equals 698 contracts). The total monthly volume included 6,030 tonnes traded in butter futures, 7,285 tonnes traded in skimmed milk powder futures and 825 tonnes traded in whey powder futures. The previous monthly record on the derivatives market for dairy products was registered in June 2017 (2,668 contracts).
Since the launch of agricultural products in May 2015, trading volumes, in particular in the dairy segment, have been growing continuously. With the envisaged launch of a Liquid Milk Future in 2018, EEX would be the first European exchange to offer a liquid milk product for trading and therefore complement its offering in dairy products with an additional direct price hedging tool.
