BOVESPA´s year-to-date foreign investment balance stood at BRL 1,709,979,564.00 or USD 819 million, as of May 31. This figure includes the net outflow of BRL 1,515,083,753.00 or USD 658 million, resulting from purchases of BRL 25,566,808,942.00 or USD 11,113,587,890.46 and sales of BRL 27,081,892,695.00 or USD 11,772,176,785.48, as shows the table below:

Investors Groups
The monthly trading turnover was pushed once again by International Investors, who led transactions with a 40.66% stake against 35.58% in April. Institutional Investors ranked second with a 25.54% participation compared to 26.84% registered in the previous month, followed by Individuals with 23.14% (against 23.76%); Financial Institutions, 9.19% (against 12.17%); Companies, 1.41%, (against 1.50%); and Other Groups, 0.06% (against a 0.15% stake).
Home Broker Stake
Home Broker system set records in trade volume and number, registering daily averages of BRL 350.5 million and 42,687 transactions (against BRL 268.9 million and 34,100 in April respectively). The Home Broker´s stake in BOVESPA total trade volume also broke record by reaching 22.60% (against 21.31%). Another outstanding figure regards the logins, which rose from 57,939 in April to 74,098 in May. The average value of transactions stood at BRL 8,200 (against BRL 7,800 in the previous month). Currently 52 brokerage houses provide this service.
Trading Value
In May, BOVESPA turned over BRL 65.1 billion or USD 29.9 billion compared to BRL 45.5 billion or USD 21.4 billion in the previous month. The daily average stood at 97,650 trades worth BRL 2.9 billion or USD 1.4 billion, compared to 83,116 trades worth BRL 2.5 billion or USD 1.2 billion registered in April. The most active stocks in terms of trading value were: Petrobras PN (BRL 7.45 billion); Vale R Doce PNA (BRL 5.08 billion); Telemar PN (BRL 3.11 billion); Usiminas PN (BRL 2.69 billion); and Bradesco PN (BRL 2.32 billion).
Markets
Cash Market was responsible for 94.2% of the total value registered in May, followed by Options Market (2.9%) and Forward Market (2.8%). After Market amounted to 25,962 trades worth BRL 214,117,062.53, against 14,592 trades worth BRL 109,022,969.99 registered in the previous month.
Ibovespa
The benchmark Ibovespa stock index closed May down 9.5%% at 36,530 points. The best performing stocks in the period were Perdigão PN (+11.6%), Embratel Par PN (+10.8%); Sadia S.A PN (+4.8%), Aracruz PNB (+2.6%) and Sabesp ON (+1.8%), while the worst performing stocks were Vivo PN (-34.0%); Contax PN (-31.6%); Tim Part S.A PN (-31.5%); Eletrobras ON (-28.1%); and Cesp PN (-26.5%).
Other Indices
The following indices also closed the month down: IGC (-6.8% at 4,068 points); IBrX-100 (-7.4% at 11,878 points); ITAG (-7.7% at 5,461 points); IBrX-50 (-7.8% at 5,338 points); IVBX-2 (-8.7% at 3,707 points); ISE (-8.9% at 1,118 points); IEE (-10.9% at 11,029 points); and ITEL (-20.9% at 824 points).
Market Capitalization and Corporate Governance
The market capitalization of BOVESPA-listed companies amounted to BRL 1.30 trillion or USD 565 million in May. The 76 corporations that so far joined the Differentiated Levels of Corporate Governance were responsible for 48% of the total market cap, registering a 56% stake in trading value and a 54% participation in trading volume on BOVESPA´s cash market.
Fixed Income
In May, 4 FIDCs (Receivable Investment Funds), 2 CRIs (Real Estate Receivable Certificate) and 2 Corporate Bonds have started to be traded on BOVESPA Fix and SOMA Fix Markets. The trading value of BOVESPA fixed income markets turned over BRL 171,390,102.06 or USD 78,687,894.06 compared to BRL 84,230,145.69 or USD 39,557,875.93 totaled in the previous month. Out of this total, BRL 98,156,215.00 or USD 45,065,063.59 referred to CRIs, BRL 59,910,541.16 or USD 27,505,872.62 to FIDCs, and BRL 13,323,345.90 or USD 6,116,957.85 to Corporate Bonds.
BOVESPA Popularization Campaign
Since September/2002, the popularization campaign BOVESPA vai até Você (BOVESPA goes to you) has stimulated the creation of 1,134 new investment clubs. The campaign resulted in 39 new investment clubs in May this year, thus raising the number of new registrations in 2006 to 190. BOVESPA had listed a total of 1,463 clubs as of May 31. According to the last data available (April), investment clubs totaled BRL 8.1 billion in net asset and 122,600 investors.
