In the first quarter of 2015, the Swiss stock exchange saw a trading volume in ETFs of CHF 33.2 billion. Compared to the previous quarter this represents an increase of over 38%. This was revealed today in the latest edition of ETF Quarterly Statistics[PDF]. An important factor was the all-time high on 28 January, when CHF 2.7 bn were traded in ETFs. In total, 322'919 ETF transactions were carried out on SIX Swiss Exchange in the 1st quarter. Average transaction size was CHF 102'687 and therefore higher than in the previous years.
Most-traded products
The most-traded ETF in the first quarter was again the iShares SMI (formerly CS ETF on SMI), with CHF 2'481.8 million (+47% compared to the previous quarter), followed by UBS ETF - MSCI USA UCITS ETF A with a trading turnover of CHF 1'326.5 mn in second place, the ZKB GOLD ETF with CHF 377.4 mn in 16th place as well as the Lyxor CHINA ENTERPRISE ETF with CHF 353.7 mn as number 19 of the top 20 products.
1'018 listed ETFs
With 39 newly listed ETFs in the first quarter of 2015, the barrier of 1'000 ETFs has been surpassed for the first time. At the end of March, 1'018 ETFs were listed on SIX Swiss Exchange (including 19 actively managed ETFs and 305 in additional trading currencies) from 19 providers; 23 official market makers provide liquidity. In March, SIX Swiss Exchange welcomed its newest issuer, WisdomTree Europe.
