These impressive figures reflected the increased interest in our markets' activities, one of which was the successful NZSX Listing of technology company Rakon Limited. Rakon made its trading debut on May 16 at an offer price of $1.60. As a result of a large amount of investor interest it ended its first day of trading on $2.36 and ended the month on $2.70. May was also the month of the NZX SciTech Index launch. Performance of the Index was boosted with Rakon's Listing, up 3.44% at the end of the month.
"New listings are an important profile builder for the markets. Two recent, very successful issues have highlighted the significance of new issues to market. New Zealand investors have really embraced Rakon. It's wonderful to see a company trading at more than 50 times its historic earnings and pushing up the profile of the Science and Technology industry at the same time," said Geoff Brown, NZX Head of Products. "Delegat's is also a listing success; it listed at $1.40 and has ended the month 30% higher at $1.82."
For the year to date, the total capital raised on NZX's markets across debt and equity totals $1.6 billion. This figure is $152 million more than the amount that was raised for the same period last year, proving an increase in overall activity in the markets.
"We're seeing more and more existing Listed companies using their Listed status to raise additional capital through debt and secondary issues. It's an accessible and convenient way to fund growth after an initial public offerings" said Brown.
Shares on the NZAX market continue to trade strongly. Total value traded for the month was $10 million, more than triple the total value traded in May 2005 ($3 million). NZAX stocks are also trading more since the same month last year. There was a total of 948 trades - more than twice as many as in April 2005 (405). NZDX total trade numbers reached 3,077, compared to 2,249 in May 2005, a 37% increase.
The Direct Market Access (DMA) metrics illustrate the continued increase in use of DMA technology and software in the New Zealand market. 38% of all trades on NZX markets in April 2006 were the result of at least one side of an order placed through a DMA application.
