Euronext Paris Derivatives Markets Trading In August 2001 Up 62.1% From August 2000 8-Month Total Up 24.8% On A Year

In August, 22,864,034 futures and options changed hands on Paris Euronext derivatives markets, 62.1% more than in the same month of last year.

This set the total for the first eight months at over 194 million, or 24.8% more than the 156 million traded in the same period of 2000.

At the end of August, total open interest reached an all-time high of 59.079 million.

In the equity and index sector, 22,470,442 futures and options were traded, with the daily average up 91.3% from August 2000. At month end, open interest in these contracts stood at a record high of 58,937,950 lots.

Turning to fixed-income derivatives, 377,656 futures were traded. Trading and open interest in the Euro 5-year contract showed a further rise, continuing the upward trend that followed the introduction of market making for the contract in May.

Average daily trading in commodity contracts was up 34% from August 2000, and the average from the beginning of the year was up 30.4% compared with the same period of last year.

The total for the first eight months of 2001 was 240.654 million futures and options, 8% more than the 222.782 million traded in the same period of 2000.

Euronext N.V., the first pan-European exchange was created in September 2000 by the merger of the Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris exchanges. Euronext N.V. has itself been listed on Euronext Paris, since July 6, 2001.
